How to get an additional 7 dB gain from a dipole

 The title may be misleading at first glance but I have a very good 10 meter dipole for working DX into Europe. I could sit on frequency “run” for hours at a time in a contest but South America was just not as easy at my new QTH. I put up a second dipole broadside South and switching back and forth I saw better than a 2 S-unit difference. The second dipole did indeed give me about 7 dB improvement!

For the last 10 meter contest I even put up a third temporary dipole pointed at the West Coast. Switching between the dipoles felt like turning a big 6 element Yagi that I once had on 10 meters! However it was much quicker to flip the switch than use the rotator!

Using a magnetic mount for HF portable communication

  Mag mount connection to vehicle You can measure your magnetic mount’s coupling to your car. Since there is no direct dc connection the coupling is through the capacitive reactance. The capacitor consists of two parallel plates, one being the bottom surface of the magnetic and the other the metal surface of the vehicle directly under the magnet. You can calculate the capacitance using the formula in the ARRL handbook. However that will not be very accurate as you need to know not only the spacing but the value of the dielectric between the two plates. That dielectric is of the vehicle’s thin layer of paint and whatever the covering is over the magnetic to keep from scratching the paint. I find it easier to measure with an inexpensive meter that will read capacitance. It is easy if you have two identical mag mounts as no connection to the vehicle is needed.   Antenna Gain, dBi, and Radiation Angle tidbits I compare all antennas to a full size halfwave dipole if possible. It’s very hard to beat a dipole if it’s is reasonably high in terms of wavelength. I also like to use the term dBi for antenna gain. There is a very good reason for doing this.
